| | | Ink drying Use inks adapted to the work and the paper quality. When printing on Condat matt, it is recommended that inks suitable for coated matt papers be used or varnish (offset or acrylic) applied on line. During photoengraving, undercolour removal should help to avoid any excessive build up of the ink. Varnishing Offset varnish Varnish applied to the ink by means of dry or wet offset in order to provide a protective coating. Its composition is very similar to that of offset inks. On drying, this type of varnish tends as a rule to give the printed text a slightly yellowish hue. It is therefore preferable to use it only as a spot varnish with four-colour printing. | | | | Water-based or acrylic varnish These varnishes may be used by the damping or, preferably, the varnishing unit. They are usually printed on line and are increasingly used to replace offset varnishes as a means of protecting the printed sheet. With them, the printed colours remain virtually intact and there is no yellowish tinge. Conversely, they have a marked effect on the ink gloss.
UV varnish Varnishes dried by means of ultraviolet radiation that may be applied to conventional dry or UV inks. At the moment these cannot be applied on line on conventional wet offset inks. With these varnishes it is possible to obtain a very high degree of gloss which may make laminating unnecessary at times. Also available as satins, they can be combined to produce alternating silk/gloss finishes by application of successive coats. Their composition is very similar to that of UV inks. | | | | |
